Lock and Unlock Aadhaar Biometrics
Biometric Locking is an official UIDAI security feature that empowers residents to temporarily or permanently disable fingerprint and iris authentication at the CIDR central server. Once locked, any biometric authentication attempt returns a rejection code, rendering cloned silicone fingerprints or skimming devices completely harmless.
Crucial Rules Before You Lock
1. Why You Should Keep Biometrics Locked
- Prevents AePS Micro-ATM Fraud: Cloned rubber fingerprints captured from registry deeds or land records cannot siphon money from your linked bank account.
- Protects Dormant IDs: If you don't frequently visit government ration (PDS) shops or biometric terminals, keeping biometrics locked provides continuous background defense.
- Complete User Autonomy: Only you control the lock using OTP sent to your registered mobile phone.
2. Step-by-Step Guide to Lock Biometrics
Follow these official steps on the myAadhaar portal or official Aadhaar app:
3. Unlocking When You Need In-Person Verification
Whenever you need to complete a SIM card purchase, open a physical bank branch account, or attend property registration:
UIDAI provides two unlock choices:
- Unlock Temporarily (Recommended): Unlocks biometrics for approximately 10 minutes. Once you scan your finger at the counter, the system automatically re-locks itself without you needing to sign in again.
- Unlock Permanently: Keeps biometrics continuously unlocked until you manually log back in to lock them again.
4. Biometric Lock vs Aadhaar Lock: Critical Difference
Many citizens confuse these two separate security features on the UIDAI portal. Read the table below carefully before selecting:
| Feature | Biometric Lock (Normal) | Aadhaar Lock (High Security) |
|---|---|---|
| What it locks | Fingerprint and Iris authentication only | ALL authentications (Biometric + OTP + Demographic) |
| OTP Services | Active OTP verification continues working | Blocked Cannot authenticate via Aadhaar number |
| Unlocking requirement | Aadhaar Number + Mobile OTP | Requires 16-digit Virtual ID (VID) |
| Risk of getting locked out | Very low | High if you forget or lose your 16-digit VID |
If you choose Aadhaar Lock instead of Biometric Lock, you MUST generate and note down your 16-digit VID (Virtual ID) first. If you activate Aadhaar Lock without a valid VID, you cannot unlock your identity online without visiting a physical centre!
5. Authentication Methods Comparison
| Authentication Method | Typical Everyday Use | Recommended Security Safeguard |
|---|---|---|
| SMS OTP | ITR filing, portal login, e-Aadhaar download | Never share the 6-digit code with anyone over phone or chat. |
| Fingerprint / Iris | Bank branch, SIM shop, ration (PDS) shops | Keep locked by default; unlock temporarily for 10 minutes. |
| 16-digit VID | Alternative credential for eKYC & forms | Share instead of 12-digit Aadhaar number to prevent data harvesting. |
